The railway accounts for just over two percent of all electricity consumption in the whole of Sweden, and it is the Swedish Transport Administration that procures the electricity used on Swedish railways. Between August and November, the electricity price more than doubled – from 26.5 öre to just over 70 öre per kilowatt hour. And it has already affected both shipping companies and passenger trains. It is already known that electricity costs will continue to rise to almost 80 öre per kwh next year, as approximately 90 percent of the electricity has already been procured. But still, both SJ and MTR say they do not plan to raise ticket prices. – We have to review our budgeting just like everyone else, but at the moment we have no plans to increase ticket prices, says Tobbe Lundell press manager at SJ.
