An anxious wait continues in the region after the Ruang Volcano, located on Ruang Island in the north of Indonesia, spewed lava and ash yesterday. An evacuation decision was made for 12 thousand people in the region as a precaution due to the volcano continuing its volcanic activities.
Ruang Island, where the volcanic volcano is located, was completely evacuated as a result of the explosions last month and 828 people living on the island were resettled to surrounding areas. Due to the intensification of the explosions in recent days, the size of the evacuation has also increased. Authorities decided to evacuate other islands around Ruang Island and the coasts of Sulawesi province against the risk of tsunami.
SPREAD ACROSS AN AREA OF THOUSAND KILOMETERS
In the statement made by the Indonesian Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation Center (PVMBG), it was stated that there have been at least three violent explosions in the volcano since yesterday, and that the ash clouds formed due to these explosions spread to a height of 5 thousand meters and an area of 1000 kilometers.
FLIGHTS ARE STOPPED AT 7 AIRPORTS
While there were severe disruptions in air traffic due to the ashes spread around as a result of volcanic eruptions, flights were completely stopped at 7 airports in the region. Ashes spewed by the volcano are heading towards the neighboring country Malaysia.
A tsunami occurred as a result of the eruption of the Anak Krakatoa Volcano in Indonesia in 2018, and 426 people lost their lives and tens of thousands of people were injured in the disaster.
