Router at home? How to protect your network from fraudsters

Router at home How to protect your network from fraudsters

Routers are an easy target for many fraudsters. By hacking a router, fraudsters gain access to a person’s Wi-Fi network and from there can obtain personal information, monitor the victim’s Internet activity and spread viruses.

Anyone who gets into another person’s network can gain access to the same person’s surf and influence the activity that takes place there.

Therefore, your router may pose a risk

Some who are familiar with fraudsters trying to get into networks are the telecom company Telia.

– The fact that fraudsters succeed can depend on several things. Some examples are weak passwords or clicking on links or visiting pages that contain viruses on some of your connected devices, says Roija Rafiipress manager at Telia Sweden, to News24.

Even the router itself can pose a high security risk depending on which company made it. If the router is bought at a low price and an unknown manufacturer, the risk is high that fraudsters can break into the network.

Routers that update automatically may therefore be preferable because the router’s security is then also updated.

The trick: How to secure your network from fraudsters

You can take several measures yourself to secure your network from fraudsters. Rafii at Telia shares four tips for anyone who wants to reduce the risk of intrusion.

  • Be sure to password protect the Internet connection and the router.
  • Never use the same password on multiple devices.
  • Use strong and complex passwords, the longer the better.
  • Keep devices updated. This often happens automatically, depending on the type of router.
  • – Your home router is a portal to the internet, and without sufficient protection, an unauthorized person can connect, says Rafii to Nyheter24.
