Rory McIlroy won – piker controversial icon

Several of golf’s biggest names such as Dustin Johnson and Phil Mickelson were in London when the Saudi-funded LIV tour had its premiere competition in London last week.

Rory McIlroy is one of those who has not been lured over. Instead, he has stayed on the PGA Tour and this weekend won the Canadian Open at 19 under par.

It was the 33-year-old’s 21st victory on the PGA Tour, which made him pass Greg Norman’s 20 PGA Tour record. Norman is now the CEO of the LIV tour and McIlroy, who has been openly critical of the controversial tour, was not late in drawing attention to his achievement.

– This is a day I will remember for a long time to come. 21 wins on the PGA Tour, one more than anyone else, says McIlroy.

By “someone else”, McIlroy clearly refers to Norman.

– I had extra motivation thanks to what is going on on the other side of the pool. The guy who leads the tour had 20 wins on the PGA Tour, we were tied and I wanted to go for him. I did too, and it’s a really cool feeling and I feel some pride.

McIlroy won by two strokes ahead of American Tony Finau.

Last week, the PGA Tour announced that all players playing on the LIV Tour will be suspended.
