Bryce Saunders, 22, had been serving a three-year-10-month sentence for firearm and drug offenses when he went “unlawfully at large” on Sept. 13 last year, breaching his statutory release terms.

Saunders was given a five-and-a-half year sentence, less time already served, at the beginning of 2021 after he was arrested during a drug raid and found to have a bag with fentanyl and cocaine, along with a loaded firearm.

Statutory release is governed by a law that allows federal offenders out after serving two-thirds of their sentence so they can serve the rest of the time in the community.

However, offenders are still serving their sentence during statutory release and must report regularly to a parole officer and follow other conditions.
