Destiny 2 developer Bungie has been awarded $12 million in a lawsuit against a Romanian cheat maker. The money would be enough to buy 240,000 Lightfall expansions on Steam. The court would have awarded Bungie even more money, but they only wanted $2,000 per violation.
What is this process?
A US court has now agreed with Bungie and declared the claims for damages to be justified.
Bungie wanted $2,000 per violation – court would even have paid $2,500
What did Bungie want? Bungie obtained insight into the data via an injunction and found that the software was sold approximately 5,848 times between November 2020 and July 2022.
Bungie then demanded a high amount of damages: $2,000 per violation – more than $11.6 million, plus additional penalties and court costs.
This is what you got now: As the US site Kotaku writes, Bungie was actually awarded $12 million. The court found that each of those 5,484 violations was actually worth $2,500, but since Bungie was only charging $2,000 per violation, they would have been awarded that money now.
Then there were other penalties, bringing the bill for the Romanian side to 12,059,912 dollars and 98 cents.
The site itself still offers cheats for Overwatch and Call of Duty, but no longer for Destiny.
The trial is another blow to cheaters. Bungie has been taking action against cheaters in Destiny 2 since 2022:
