Today, Romania and Bulgaria fully join the Schengen area of European free movement. With the accession, passport checks at common land borders will be removed.
This was confirmed in mid-December, when the EU countries unanimously approved the countries’ full accession to the Schengen area.
Already since the spring of last year, it has been possible to travel to Romania and Bulgaria from other countries in the Schengen area by ship or plane without border checks.
Within the Schengen area, people can travel freely without internal border checks.
