Roland Nilsson turns 60 today – now the WC 94 hero reveals his favorite team

Roland Nilsson is a real legend in Swedish football.
Today we pay tribute to the WC 94 bronze hero on his 60th birthday.
And “Rolle” reveals which is his favorite team.

There are few Swedish footballers who can measure up to Roland Nilsson’s long and successful career. He played elite football for a full 25 years and has since continued as a coach for several different Swedish clubs over the years.

Nilsson’s career

Everything started in Helsingborgs IF in the 80s before the career went on to the Swedish big club IFK Gothenburg and the hunt for titles. Reliable right-back “Rolle” would go on to win four SC golds, a Uefa Cup title, a league cup title, the World Cup bronze in 1994 and the Golden Ball as Sweden’s best footballer in 1996.

The Swedish legend had several fine years in England for the clubs Sheffield Wednesday and Coventry, as well as a couple of returns to Helsingborg before ending his career in Gais in 2006. Nilsson was given as a right-back in the Swedish A national team for a whole 14 years (1986-2000) and reached a total of 116 international matches, where the summer of success in 1994 clearly stands out the most during his time in Blue Yellow.

“Role” back

After his playing career, we have seen Roland Nilsson coach in Gais, Malmö FF, Danish FC Copenhagen and IFK Göteborg – where it has been a SM gold in 2010 as the main merit. He has also been the national team captain for the Swedish U17 and U21 national teams and is today back in the Allsvenskan and Swedish football again.

Recently, it was announced that Rolle is joining BK Häcken’s management staff for a special role with a focus on developing defensive players. This means his fifth club in Sweden and actually the third Gothenburg team in his career, but after all the different club addresses, you naturally wonder which is his biggest favorite team.

His favorite team

There is a given favorite when Nilsson is asked which team his heart beats the most for outside Sweden’s borders.
– Manchester United, he says in an old interview with the Football Channel.

Remarkably, he does not choose either of his old clubs Sheffield Wednesday or Coventry.
– Well, that’s clear, but if you count since childhood, it’s United.

Roland Nilsson also gets to name the best player of all time, both abroad and in Sweden.
– Pelé when I was very small, then Maradona, then Zidane. Has no direct favorite of Swedish players, there are many to pick, he says in the interview that was done in 2010.
