A robotic dragon that sprays water and puts out fires could make life safer for firefighters around the world.

The kite was developed by Japanese researchers with the goal of making it easier for firefighters to put out fires and reduce the risks, Vetenskapsradion reports.

The robot doesn’t really look like a traditional kite, but is a four-meter long water hose with eight powerful water jets that can be remotely controlled towards the flames. It has a thermal camera in the hose head that makes it find its way.

The drawings and study have now been published in the scientific journal “Frontiers”, and the drawings are free to use by robot builders worldwide. But the researchers estimate that it could take up to ten years before it can take on real fires.
