Robert Downey Jr. will soon be making his return to the MCU. After Iron Man, this is his second role in this universe. But he is not the only actor who has played more than one character in Marvel films.
Who does Robert Downey Jr play? His first major role for Marvel hardly needs any introduction. It is, of course, Iron Man, whom Downey Jr. has played in two more solo films and other films such as the ensemble films, such as Avengers: End Game, since the first film in 2008.
With this role, which saved his career, the actor secured a permanent place in the MCU and also in the minds of Marvel fans. Some were all the more surprised when it was announced that Robert Downey Jr. would soon be seen in a new role.
The actor plays Doctor Doom in the films Avengers 5 (Doomsday) and 6 (Secret Wars), which will be released in 2026 and 2027. The character is one of the oldest Marvel villains and was invented by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby in 1962. On MeinMMO you will find 5 reasons why Doctor Doom is more terrifying than Thanos.
So it’s important to ignore Downey Jr. and his Iron Man when he appears as a new character in the MCU. However, this isn’t the first time this has happened. Another well-known actor has already played two roles for Marvel.
The biggest villain and Deadpool’s opponent
Which actor is it about? Similar to Iron Man, the great antagonist Thanos is probably burned into the minds of fans. He is played by Josh Brolin, another actor who has already worked for Marvel a second time.
In addition to his appearances in the Avengers films, complete with destructive finger snaps, Brolin also appeared in Deadpool 2. There he played Cable, a character from the X-Men comics who appears in the film as Deadpool’s antagonist before they briefly team up.
Strictly speaking, Deadpool 2 was not an integral part of the MCU, but fans know the faces of their favorite characters, which can sometimes be confusing. In the end, however, it’s the acting that counts, which can sometimes disguise the fact that the same actor is at work again.
Are there any other actors who appear more often? Yes, there are. Besides Downey Jr. and Brolin, there are a handful of actors who also play multiple roles. But they are usually much smaller. Chris Evans played Captain America as well as “The Torch” in The Fantastic Four, and Michelle Yeoh played characters in Guardians of the Galaxy and Shang-Chi.
Do you mind multiple castings like in these cases? Or are you even happy when you see certain actors in different roles within the same universe? Feel free to write us your opinion in the comments.
