Road cycling Tour of Italy starts for the first time

Cycling’s major competition, the Giro, will start next May in Albania, where three stages will be run.

The men’s road cycling tour of Italy, or the Giro, starts next May in Albania. The organizers of the Giro said on their website on Monday that the race will start on May 9 from the port city of Durres and the finish of the first stage will be in Tirana. The length of the opening leg is 164 kilometers.

The next day, a 13.7-kilometer personal time trial will be run in Tirana. On the third day of the race in Albania, a 160-kilometer stage will be pedaled, with the start and finish located in the city of Vlore.

After that, the riders move to Italy. Albania has never hosted the Giro before.

The Tour of Italy is, along with the Tours of France and Spain, one of the three biggest stage races in road cycling. The final route of next year’s Giro will be announced in January.
