A longtime volunteer at Riverview Gardens was recognized for his dedication and service.

The Riverview Gardens Family Council announced Phil McCracken as the recipient of the 2023 Norm Lachapelle Award for Volunteerism.

The award was created in 2019 by the family council in honor of fellow member, friend and volunteer Lachapelle, who passed away in 2018.
McCracken is a Smart Serve-certified bartender for Riverview Gardens. He spends most of his Tuesday and Thursday afternoons at the Riverview Gardens Pub.
He started volunteering in 2016 and has given more than 450 hours during this time.
“Phil goes above and beyond to be welcoming and friendly to everyone he encounters, and he makes our pub hour a very enjoyable time for our residents,” Janice Ward, family council co-chair, said in a release. “He engages everyone as they arrive and makes sure the regulars have their ‘usual’ in a very timely fashion.

“Phil then converses with everyone and plays a little music. He is reliable, dependable and consistent. He can be counted on to attend when scheduled and is always willing to come in whenever needed. Phil brings a little bit of ‘Cheers’ to Riverview Gardens every time he tends bar.”
Linda Lachapelle, Norm’s wife, noted the five-year anniversary of her husband’s passing was marked recently.
She said volunteering became a “second career” for Norm.
“It’s important to recognize that so many volunteers are following in his footsteps,” she said.
“It’s heartwarming to know that Norm’s devotion in helping others continues to flourish in the hearts of the volunteers, especially Phil, who so generously continues to give his time, energy and love to the residents of Riverview Gardens.”
McCracken said he “didn’t start volunteering to receive awards,” but appreciated the honor.
Volunteer opportunities include visiting, meal assistance, bartending, portering for spiritual services and the hair salon.
