According to Penttilä, Trump sees the withdrawal from Ukraine as a failure, comparable to the US withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021.
The US’s 20-year military campaign in Afghanistan ended chaotically in 2021. The US invaded Afghanistan to defeat the extremist Islamist Taliban, which rose to power almost immediately after the US withdrew from the country.
According to Penttilä, Trump does not want a similar event in Ukraine during his reign.

Penttilä reminds us that even though Trump’s rise to power will likely result in a lot of bad things, positive things can also follow from it.
