Risk of Third World War in the Suwalkor Corridor

Russia is losing its last influence over the Baltics • “Will put in any forces”

Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania have previously resigned from Russia, and today the electricity connections are cut. Estonia is the country that has the longest border with Russia and there are several electricity passages. Latvia also has a border with Russia with electric roads to the country.

– Lithuania, on the other hand, is connected through the same system, but has its wires connected via Belarus. That solution is a remnant from the former Soviet Union where all sub -republics were connected to the same system, says Russian scholar Malcolm Dixelius.

Now the countries will instead connect to the Western European electricity grid.

“The heart of our energy system will hit the same rhythm as the Western European system,” Zygimantas Vaiciunas, Minister of Energy in Lithuania, told the Lithuanian news site Delfi.

Russia loses impact

Malcolm Dixelius believes that the Baltic action is important from a security policy perspective.

– It is extremely important. It is the last rest of the Soviet system and the last compulsory connection one has had with former Russia. Now you have a freedom to do as you please. Russia is losing one last opportunity to influence these countries, he says.

Corridor with the risk of war

But the boundaries also have a different meaning. From a NATO perspective, the area is stated as very sensitive. There is a corridor, the Suwalk corridor, which runs between Belarus and Russia’s Kaliningrad, which is identified as a high -risk area.

– This is where the Third World War begins, if it starts. It will be sensitive for Russia to hold the motherland together with Kaliningrad. They will put in any forces to open that corridor.

The Russian scholar is similar to the situation at the Second World War when Germany entered Poland in 1939.

– And that is why, strategically, that the Baltic countries are so important. And also because Estonia is above all so exposed. An incredibly small country with just over a million in the population and this long border with Russia.
