The bacteria from the algae bloom that the midsummer weekend’s sunny weather accelerated are still in the water, but have been mixed down a bit below the surface due to winds. This means that there is a risk of new algae blooms when it is now expected to be warmer, says Markus Lindh, marine biologist at SMHI.
– If the weather gets better, it can go pretty fast, he says.
During the week, high summer heat is expected throughout the country and temperatures up to 30 degrees. The weather that is most favorable for algal blooms is what Markus Lindh describes as good bathing weather, when it is sunny and calm.
– When it’s that weather, you can expect them to come, says Markus Lindh.
According to SMHI’s measurements, it is in the central Baltic Sea that it will most likely go fastest for an algae bloom to flare up.
It still blooms in several places near the coasts of Finland and Estonia.
