Rising food prices mean that children in Umeå eat more school meals: “The parents can’t afford it”

Leksand extended the winning streak beat AIK

– Some kitchens signal that more food is being served today than it has been in the past, says Maria Svensson, area manager within meal service at Umeå municipality.

More food is eaten for lunch, but the change is most noticeable when it comes to breakfast and snacks at preschool and after-school, where the meals are usually included in the fee paid by the parents.

– Then maybe you use it more in the current situation when based on the food prices that are in the stores, she says.

Chef Polly: “Becomes much more porridge”

At the Smöret preschool in Umeå, there used to be around 25 children who came to the preschool already for breakfast – now there are over 50 children.

– There will be much more porridge in the morning and much more work, says chef Polly Carlsson.

She also sees food prices as the reason why the situation has become like this.

– The parents can no longer afford it, she says.

More children who want to eat during the holidays

Also at Ersdungen school, the number of children who eat breakfast during free time has doubled.

– On Mondays and Fridays, we mostly have children who again have lunch and breakfast, says chef Linda Westin.

Even on holidays, more children go to leisure to eat.

– It is a big change. Attendance has increased, she says.
