Riots: “I have not yet taken the step of the RN, but …”, our readers react

Neighborhoods: when will firm decisions be made?

Madeleine Gibon, Saumur (Maine-et-Loire).

Your article does a good job of analyzing the “whatever the cost” policy of our rulers in the face of crime in “priority neighborhoods”. I have roots in Roubaix and I can confirm it to you. This city benefits from everything: schools, technical school, media library, sports hall, social centers… but nothing helps! Criminals and drug traffickers rule the roost. The French are tired and expect firm decisions, not aid distributed unnecessarily. (“Neighbourhoods: 40 years of disaster“, L’Express of July 6).

Nahel case: and the parents?

Alain and Odile Croiset, Lyon (Rhône)

There has been a lot of media coverage of Nahel’s passing. This one is obviously regrettable, but he did not stop at the injunction of the police, had neither a driver’s license nor insurance, had already had trouble with the police and was not 18 years old. Aren’t parents supposed to be responsible for their minor children? (“Death of Nahel: when the Republic wavers”on Lexpress.fr).

I haven’t taken the RN step yet, but…

Catherine Cedolin, Verneuil-sur-Seine (Yvelines)

I am appalled by the abandonment of discipline and authority in families or at school. The policies of the past twenty years have consisted of seeing nothing and seeking social peace. I am in favor of the abolition of family allowances in the event of the parents’ deficiency since this seems to be the best way of making them responsible. I have not (yet) taken the step of the RN, because of its absurd economic proposals, but wouldn’t this finally be the opportunity to make my anger heard, covered by the ideas of the left-wing sores and LFI relayed by the press? The above is the voice of a French woman who works and pays her taxes, who devotes and has devoted time and energy to her children and who is today outraged (“Riots: we are dealing with a disaffected France”, by Sylvain Fort. Express of July 6).

Soon taxes on electric cars?

Philippe Prinet, Lille (North)

When there are more electric cars than petrol cars, the state will lose a lot in taxes on petroleum products. How will the state compensate for this loss? Will there be new taxes? (“Electric cars: but what is the Tesla method‘”? CTRL + F Podcast June 22).

Germany and French nuclear power

Christian Harten, Quimper (Finistère)

The Rosa Luxemburg and Heinrich Böll foundations are think tanks of the parties Die Linke (The Left) and Die Grünen (The Greens), which correspond to LFI and EELV in France. They therefore represent neither the government nor “the Germans”. Across the Rhine, according to polls, the majority of the population condemns the shutdown of nuclear power plants. (“Nuclear: “Germany, through its foundations, seeks to weaken France”“, on Lexpress.fr).

Pensions: the shortcomings of the COR

Louis Causero, Essey-lès-Nancy (Meurthe-et-Moselle)

I appreciated the article on the somewhat ambiguous role of the Pensions Guidance Council (COR), in a context where its action should have been decisive! It is time to put an end to a useless, even harmful, organization of national political activity. I also deplored the pitiful debate that took place, and I add the disappointment of the role of the so-called reformist unions (the CFDT and the Unsa, in particular). The debate should have focused on the limits of the distribution model with probably a dual system: a universal device (preferably with points) and an individual device (known as capitalization), but I admit to being an old technocrat far removed from ambient populism! (“Pensions: the masquerade continues“, L’Express of June 29).
