Police were forced to use water cannons and tear gas after being attacked by Belgian supporters in central Brussels.
Windows were smashed, fireworks were set off and cars were set on fire.
The unrest started even before kick-off.
About a hundred police officers were mobilized, local residents were asked to stay away from the area, subway stations were closed and streets were blocked to prevent the violence from spreading.
Brussels Mayor Philippe Close condemned the events on social media. “I condemn in the strongest terms the incidents during the afternoon. The police have already intervened decisively and I discourage supporters from coming to the center… I have asked the police to arrest all troublemakers”.
