Riots 72 arrests throughout France overnight from Monday to Tuesday

The relative calm seems to be confirmed. The number of arrests fell on Monday evening, as on previous nights: 72 (including 24 in the inner suburbs of Paris), against 157 the day before, according to the Ministry of the Interior. At the height of the urban violence, 1,311 arrests took place in the evening from Friday to Saturday.

In addition, 24 buildings were set on fire or damaged throughout the territory, according to this report released on Tuesday morning. The Ministry of the Interior also recorded 159 vehicle fires and 202 fires on public roads (mainly garbage cans) during this seventh night of riots sparked by the death of young Nahel, 17, killed by a policeman during a road check in Nanterre. The night system of the previous days, i.e. a maximum staff of 45,000 police and gendarmes, had been maintained overnight from Monday to Tuesday.

Monday was marked by many rallies across France in support of the mayor of L’Haÿ-les-Roses Vincent Jeanbrun, the day after the car-ram attack on his home in this town of Val- de-Marne.

According to figures sent to AFP by the Ministry of Justice, since Friday 3,915 people have been arrested (including 1,244 minors) giving rise to 374 immediate appearances.

The movement of Emmanuel Macron in a barracks

First trip since the start of the crisis, Emmanuel Macron went in the middle of the evening with his Minister of the Interior Gérald Darmanin to the Bessières barracks, in the 17th arrondissement of the capital, which hosts the staff of the BAC (Brigade anti-crime) at night and departmental intervention companies.

In the process, after midnight, the President of the Republic, who is to receive this Tuesday the mayors of some 220 municipalities “victims of abuse” throughout the country, went to the Paris police headquarters, for new exchanges , then specified the Elysée. The executive asked to maintain “a massive presence” on “the ground”, “to reinforce the return to calm and order”, his entourage told AFP.

Later that night, the head of state thanked the police, gendarmes and firefighters in a tweet for “(their) exceptional mobilization in recent nights”. “Police, gendarmes, firefighters, thank you for your exceptional mobilization these last nights. I know how difficult these have been for you and your families. You have my support”, wrote Emmanuel Macron on Twitter.

“At least 20 million euros” in damage to transport in Ile-de-France

It’s time for the first assessment of the damage. The riots caused “at least 20 million euros in damage” to public transport in Ile-de-France, according to a first estimate, published on Monday, by Ile-de-France Mobilités (IDFM), regional transport authority .

In this sum, it is necessary to count “the burnt buses, a burnt tram, two damaged trams and the street furniture which was broken”, specified IDFM to AFP, confirming information from the Parisian.

In total, 39 buses have been burned, everywhere in Ile-de-France since the start of the riots, in particular 12 buses in the RATP depot in Aubervilliers (Seine-Saint-Denis) and 14 buses in the ProCars company depot in Provins (Seine-et-Marne), detailed IDFM. It costs around 350,000 euros for a bus, according to the regional transport authority.

IDFM recalled the renewal Monday evening of the stop from 9 p.m. on the circulation of buses and trams, set up for several days, stressing that “apart from the Aubervilliers depot, the damage has been greatly limited since the setting up of this decree”.

Thus surface transport in Ile-de-France, that is to say buses and trams, will return to the depot again on Monday no later than 9 p.m. “to preserve the safety of agents and travelers”, even if the intensity of the riots has decreased significantly, IDFM had indicated at midday.

One billion euros in damage, according to an initial estimate by Medef

For his part, the boss of bosses, Geoffroy Roux de Bézieux, said he estimated the damage to businesses caused by the riots at one billion euros, in an interview with Le Parisien published on Monday evening.

“It is too early to give a precise figure but we are at more than a billion euros, not to mention the damage to tourism. The videos of the riots, which have circulated around the world, are degrading the image of the France,” said the leader of Medef, the most influential employers’ union.

According to his figures, more than 200 businesses were completely looted, 300 bank branches destroyed, 250 tobacconists affected, “with operating methods of absolute violence. Everything was stolen, even cash registers, before setting fire to destroy”.

On the subject of compensation which concerns many companies and in particular the smallest, Geoffroy Roux de Bézieux assures that “the insurers are mobilized to go as quickly as possible, I am quite confident that the businesses concerned will be compensated”.

The controversial kitty “does not contribute to appeasement”

A pot of support for the family of the policeman who shot the young Nahel on Tuesday in Nanterre exceeded 1,300,000 euros on the Internet on Tuesday, arousing the indignation of elected officials on the left. “Support for the family of the Nanterre police officer, Florian M. who has done his job and who is today paying a high price”, says the text accompanying the kitty, created by the former spokesperson for the candidate’s campaign. extreme right Eric Zemmour, Jean Messiha.

The fact that the kitty was launched “by a person close to the far right” does not “contribute” to “appeasement”, Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne ruled on Monday after a meeting with the whole political groups to discuss this tragedy and the riots that followed.

She added that it would be up to the courts to decide “if necessary” on the legality of this kitty, but that “it is not the government that can decide whether or not (its) existence”.
