Player Tyler1 is one of League of Legends’ most controversial players, and Riot Games has now turned to him to help save the LCS’s declining viewership numbers.
Who is this about? This is Tyler Tyler1 Steinkamp, one of League of Legends’ most controversial players. In 2016, the streamer was originally banned for life, as a video on his YouTube channel shows.
This meant that he was no longer allowed to have a LoL account, otherwise this would also lead to a direct ban. But now Riot turned to Tyler1 to save a very specific league.
Tyler1 was too toxic, now he should push the viewer numbers
Why was Tyler1 banned? The streamer was banned at the time for extremely toxic behavior. He streamed games in which he intentionally lost. This goes against League of Legends’ code of conduct. Yelling at his fellow players during live streams also didn’t exactly contribute to a good reputation at Riot.
After his ban, Tyler1 streamed other players’ games and organized tournaments with the community. For this effort and “after 613 days of intensive rehab,” Riot rewarded him in 2018 by lifting the ban and giving the streamer a second chance.
Riot is now going one step further and officially collaborating with the streamer by allowing him to co-stream the LCS.
Why is Tyler1 allowed to co-stream the LCS? One factor is probably that Tyler1 is one of the biggest LoL creators worldwide and has built up a large audience, especially in America. On Twitch alone, he has over 5 million followers and an average of 15,000 viewers (via sullygnome.com).
However, the main reason for the collaboration is probably the decline in the number of viewers of the LCS. Things have not been looking too rosy in the North American league in recent years:
What is Riot’s goal? The goal for Riot could therefore be to boost the number of viewers again with Tyler1. This does not seem unrealistic, as he brings with him a huge community and the concept of co-streaming has already been a complete success for other leagues such as the LEC. In an interview with Tolkin and the head of the LEC, we talked about the importance of co-streaming: In the past, many people broadcast LoL in Germany, today there is only one – We speak with Twitch streamer Tolkin and the LEC boss
