The dystopian comic series Judge Dredd was first filmed in 1995, starring Sylvester Stallone. Today, however, the film feels more like a trash fest with the lead actor’s effects and goofy one-liners. Tuesday night the old Judge Dredd movie with Sly is on TV. The much better version of the sci-fi stuff you get somewhere else.

The newer Dredd is the much more brilliant action banger

The 2012 remake of Dredd, like the first attempt with Stallone, is set in a dystopian future in which supercops play as executioner and judge work. Here the young policewoman Anderson (Olivia Thirlby) and her mentor Judge Dredd (The Boys and Lord of the Rings star Karl Urban) have to storm a high-rise building in which a dangerous drug gang has holed up.

The trash factor of the Stallone version is no longer present in Dredd. Instead, director Pete Travis relies on extremely stylized action, reminiscent of genre classics like The Matrix with slow-motion sequences and images full of brutality and beauty.
