Rick series brings back a fan favorite that no one really expected

We won’t find out until the finale whether The Ones Who Live can really bring all the threads together. But with the penultimate episode, The Walking Dead spin-off is already delivering a huge surprise.

After the series brought back not only Rick (Andrew Lincoln) and Michonne (Danai Gurira), but also villain Jadis and two other characters from the original, a real veteran who has been part of the zombie universe for 10 years is now returning.

Warning, spoilers follow on The Ones Who Live:

The Ones Who Live Episode 5 surprises with the Walking Dead return of Gabriel Stokes

Right at the beginning of the episode Show us the way a mysterious figure comes into the picture. After a few seconds the big surprise follows: It is Gabriel Stokes (Seth Gilliam). The priest of the post-apocalypse has been part of The Walking Dead universe since season 5. And his first appearance since the original series finale is much more than just a small cameo.

Gabriel’s secret meeting with Jadis

The bad news first: Gabriel is not part of the current storyline. So there is no reunion between Michonne, Rick and their former companion. Instead, The Ones Who Live brings the character back for several flashbacks that explore the complicated inner life of Jadis/Anne (Pollyanna McIntosh).

It could also be the horror version of Two in One Day. Once a year, Gabriel and Jadis, who were once in a relationship, meet for confidential conversations in a forest near Alexandria. In these, the CRM soldier talks about her inner conflict. Of course, she doesn’t mention the fact that Rick is still alive.

This is what the flashbacks with Gabriel reveal about The Walking Dead timeline

We see three meetings between Jadis and Gabriel, which once again illustrate the special bond between them. What’s also exciting: Through content details, it can be said exactly how the flashbacks are to be classified in the The Walking Dead timeline:

  • 3 years ago: before the Whisperer conflict (Season 9)
  • 2 years ago: after the conflict with the Whisperers (Season 10)
  • 1 year ago: at the end of the Commonwealth storyline (Season 11)
  • With Gabriel’s final scene taking place another year later, The Ones Who Live gives us a clue as to when the spin-off is in comparison to The Walking Dead. We are basically where we are in time parallel to the series finale, which ended with a one-year time jump. Because in the present, Gabriel appears for another meeting. Jadis, however, doesn’t show up. Because she is already dead at this point.

When is episode 6 of The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live coming?

The 6th and final episode of The Ones Who Live will be released in this country on April 1, 2024 on MagentaTV. But fans don’t have to wait long for The Walking Dead supplies. The second season of the spin-off series Daryl Dixon starts in the summer.
