At the age of 44, Riad Sattouf has become a benchmark in author comics. Pampered by critics and readers, it attracts far beyond the circle of comic book lovers.
The six volumes of his autobiographical series The Arab of the future, in which he recounts his childhood in Syria, then his adolescence in Brittany in a discordant home, have sold several million copies and have been translated into twenty languages. The designer willingly explains that he wanted to tell, simply and always with humor, a story that his Breton grandmother could read.
After the first provocative albums published in the early 2000s, Riad Sattouf digs a furrow in which he excels: the former fine arts student knows how to describe with simplicity the life of adolescents like no other. He does it with The Notebooks of Esther, funny and first-person accounts of a Parisian followed from the age of 10. Or with The Young Actora new series starring comedian Vincent Lacoste.
Workaholic, Riad Sattouf created his publishing house to publish these new graphic novels. And he is currently preparing to write his third feature film with the comic actors Les Inconnus.
