Rhodes, the largest island in the Dodecanese, was occupied by the Knights of Saint John of Jerusalem from 1309 to 1523, before coming under Ottoman rule until 1912. From this turbulent past, it inherited a splendid medieval city surrounded by 4 km of ramparts and separated into two sets: the upper town, entirely built by the Knights, and the lower town, where Gothic architecture rubs shoulders with mosques and buildings from the Ottawa period.
