Scientists from the Babraham Institute in England, with a new technique they developed, rejuvenated the skin cells of a 53-year-old woman by 30 years, making them equal to the cells of a 23-year-old woman. In the press release, the institute emphasized that the scientific study result, although at a very early stage, could create a revolution in restorative medicine.
“Research at the Babraham Institute has developed a 30-year ‘time lapse’ method of human skin cells and a method that reverts the aging clock for cells without losing their specific functions,” the Institute’s press release said. As a result of the scientific study, it was stated that besides rejuvenating the molecular measurements of biological age, it was able to partially restore the function of aged cells.
CELLS LIKE COME FROM A 23-Year-Old
Prof Reik’s team used the IPS technique in 53-year-old skin cells, advancing the technique previously used in the cloned sheep named ‘Dolly’. The cells obtained in the study were found to turn into skin cells that looked and acted as if they had come from a 23-year-old.
In the statement made by the Institute, it was stated that “partially rejuvenated cells showed signs that they behaved more like young cells in experiments that mimicked a skin wound.” It was stated that this new method, which builds on the research on stem cells, will continue to be studied before it is moved to clinical trials.
