Welcome to the world of fairy tales – in “The plucky squire” you play the little gunman Jot who, with the help of his friends, must save the world from the evil wizard Humgrump. Namely, he uses his magic by rewriting the story you live in and taking power.
To prevent that, Jot will have to venture not only in the world but also outside the world in a game that really manages to marry action with gameplay.
Because it is a playful adventure where you move in and out between the pages of the book and the children’s room it is in. You switch between two and three dimensions in a fun and obvious way.
The developers All Possible Futures isn’t the first with the idea of letting the player move between worlds or shift perspectives – but they do it with an imaginativeness that makes the heart click. They play with our expectations, take confident game moments from the game world’s various genres and make it work perfectly, spice up the experience without becoming predictable.
The fact that it also has such a wide visual spectrum that it can accommodate everything from crazy rhythm games to 80s bullet hell games without itchy eyes is a great achievement.
All of the adventure’s puzzles stretch between the different perspectives, without becoming too far-fetched or difficult to understand. It’s a game that’s kind, wants you to succeed, and gently nudges you in the right direction. The thoughtfulness is repeated in the menus where you can set the difficulty levels at a detailed level – all in order to be an inclusive game that everyone can have fun in.
Every now and then “The plucky squire” drops – if not steering speed, then maybe speed. From time to time the control slips until the case becomes long – in places it trips itself up with a fixed camera angle when you want to be able to get a better overview. But there are small blemishes that can be tolerated.
Because this is a playful game, it plays with itself, with the rules of the game world. It rewrites, rewrites and changes perspective both in itself and how it is played. With a charming playfulness, you can tumble between the worlds – all you need to enjoy is really an intact child’s mind.
