“Before” is described by the streaming service Apple tv+ as a “character-driven psychological thriller” (by the way, exactly the same description that Netflix gave to “The Chestnut Man” and HBO gave to “The Undoing”), but perhaps rather falls under the category of light horror.
The plot is initially reminiscent of M Night Shyamalan’s horror classic “The Sixth Sense”: A child psychiatrist, Eli (Billy Crystal), meets a patient who somehow seems connected to his past.
Eli has recently lost his wife and doesn’t want to process his feelings. One night, an eight-year-old Noah (Jacobi June) shows up at his house, and a few days later, Eli becomes Noah’s doctor—one last job before retirement.
But the boy’s problems seem to be partly of a supernatural nature.
