REVEIL Review: A Mysterious Journey in Search of Walter’s Missing Family

REVEIL, a narrative-oriented psychological horror game in which we experience the story of Walter Thompson, is the guest of our review. In the production designed to bring the dark worlds of Alfred Hitchcock and Stephen King to life in the computer environment, we delve into the terrible memories of the character Walter Thompson and try to find their way in his decaying mental labyrinth. The play takes place in an abandoned circus of the 1980s. This psychological horror game offers deep storytelling by dealing with universal themes such as the importance of family and the fear of loss.

Walter wakes up disoriented in a reality where his wife Martha and daughter Dorie have disappeared. Reality awaits him in a different way than the last time he left it. He does not know that he has locked his room door nor where his medications are. Everything feels both surreal and familiar.

As we progress, we have to explore our surroundings and pieces of Walter’s past. At the heart of the narrative are Walter’s days as a stage producer at the circus and the mystery of the night when all the events took place. In this journey where the boundaries between reality, memory and imagination blur, we witness a chain of crazy and strange events.

First, let me talk a little about the environment of the game. REVEIL takes place in a generally dark environment, although not from the beginning to the end. This is one of the important factors that provide the feeling of psychological tension. However, we also need to give justice to the music. Sometimes it gets so tense that I can’t help but say that the reason for this is the music and sound effects.

REVEIL does not give us a very intense action, but you have to constantly analyze something. You wake up in the locked room I mentioned above, and you need the key to get out. Of course, it’s not in your pocket. You need to find it, but first you need to solve other riddles to get it out of its hiding place. This is generally how we progress. The way to solve the main riddle is to solve the riddles that complete it.

The production offered a wide area of exploration by dividing the story into five different parts. While you progress by solving riddles, you also question what the purpose of the game is as you progress. But don’t misunderstand this. Walter’s only wish is to be reunited with his family. Even though the clowns or ghosts that suddenly appear as you progress may give you a momentary chill, it won’t take you long to realize that this is a game of Walter’s mind.

During this progression, various collectibles have been presented to those who want to dive deeper into the adventure, although I do not yet know what the purpose of collecting them is. Although narrative-driven games do not offer replayability, perhaps they can be replayed to complete them. Additionally, an important feature that increases replayability is that there is more than one ending to be discovered.

Reveil Review

One of the aspects of the game that impressed me most was its graphics. Even though it was developed with Unity, it performed beyond my expectations. It delivered a smooth experience at 4K on my MSI Katana laptop with i7 and 4070. It never dropped below 100 FPS. While the game, which we call motion sickness, was progressing, I suffered a lot from the nausea caused by your inactivity. I even had to quit the game from time to time. However, I don’t know how correct it is to blame a personal problem on the game.

No matter how much you pay attention to the developments around you as you progress in a world full of tension, the elements that you encounter suddenly or do not appear when you expect them constitute the basic tension elements of the game. Imagine being chased at some point. When you look back, a follower who is 10 meters away from you cannot reach you while you solve the puzzle, but as soon as you complete your work, he can jump on you so that you can continue without slowing down.

You experience this situation constantly for approximately 4-5 hours of game time. There were times when I found myself saying, “Oh, let it go. No matter what happens to Dorie.” Still, I moved forward without giving up, and I’m glad I did.

REVEIL, which has a very affordable price level, is sold on Steam for $ 8.99 as part of the campaign that will continue until March 13. Even though it will increase to $9.99 later, it still has a good price level. If you like this type of games, it stands out as one of the productions you should try. Even though it is not a PT, it is one of the games that will make you have a good time. It even gives us reason to wait for Pixelsplit’s next games.
