A visit to a used electronics store led to the revival of a legendary console on a most unusual screen.
What did the hobbyist put together? Reddit user Joshisnot12 visited a local used electronics store. There, as he posted on Reddit, he discovered a portable DVD player with a built-in screen. In itself this is nothing unusual, but what aroused his curiosity were the connections. Because they not only allowed the player’s image signal to be transferred to an external display, but also fed into one. Then an idea came to him.
Luckily, he found the cables he needed for his spontaneous project just a few shelves away. At home, a legendary game console from Japan came back to life on the special screen.
Speaking of tinkering: Students have built something dystopian out of META glasses, a PC and an AI: spy glasses. We present the project, which aims to point out the dangers of technology, in article form. You can watch the corresponding video directly:
A dedicated monitor, even for an NES
Which console did he connect? Joshisnot12 connected the portable DVD player to a Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). And it actually worked. He can now play classics like Mega Man 2 pictured above or other games like the oldest parts of the Mario series on it. According to him, the display that appears bluish in the picture is actually black.
Can I recreate this? Theoretically yes, you only need an NES console, which is available for under 100 euros on platforms like eBay. You can sometimes get portable DVD players on the same site for less than 20 euros. However, you have to make sure that the screen has the correct input or that you have a corresponding adapter to be able to use the old outputs of the NES.
The project is getting plenty of love on Reddit. There are only a few people who are interested in such a niche project, but for them it is the epitome of exemplary retro:
A resourceful technician from the northern USA did much more than just tinker. He finally had enough of his slow internet – and so did his neighbors. He set out to become the region’s leading Internet provider: Frustrated with his Internet provider, he built his own network – today he is a competitor to his ex-provider
