91,000 is the number of people arrested in August while trying to cross the southern border of the United States with their families. It is also a record. The previous one, nearly 85,000, dated from May 2019, under the Trump administration.

According to statistics obtained by the daily The Washington Postthis is the first time that those arrested in family form the first group of people intercepted since the beginning of the Biden administration.

In general, illegal crossing attempts increased sharply during the summer, +30% in July and August. They had fallen significantly in May, in June, after the new procedures put in place by the government.

These measures created new legal possibilities for migrants to reach American territory. In return, the administration had announced more severity for those who still tried to arrive illegally.

Joe Biden had campaigned on the promise of immigration reform and more humane treatment for migrants. The subject is one of the main reproaches leveled at the White House by Republicans, who denounce the chaos on the southern border. This should not stop during the campaign for the 2024 election.
