“Luxury watch” investigation in Peru brought resignation. While the luxury watch investigation against President Dina Boluarte continues in Peru, Peruvian Minister of Internal Affairs Victor Torres resigned. In his statement after the cabinet meeting, Torres said, “I am leaving peacefully with clean hands,” and stated that his resignation was due to “family and health problems.”

Boluarte’s house was raided on March 30, upon the instructions of the Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office. The police broke the door with a battering ram. During the operation, Boularte’s luxury watches, which he did not declare as assets, were searched.

LUXURY WATCH INVESTIGATION

A preliminary investigation was launched against Boluarte two weeks ago after news spread in the Peruvian media that he wore different luxury watches. The purpose of the investigation was to determine whether there were grounds for a formal investigation against the head of state. Asked how he could buy so many luxury watches, Boluarte stated that he bought the watches with the money he earned by working since he was 18 years old. Boluarte said, “I entered the palace with clean hands and I will leave with clean hands.”

After former Peruvian President Castillo was dismissed by the Congress on December 7, 2022, Dina Boluarte was appointed as his replacement. Demonstrations were held across the country demanding Boluarte’s resignation and holding elections, and more than 50 people lost their lives in the incidents.
