Resident reaches out to police over fraudulent website

A Haldimand resident has alerted OPP to a fraudulent website.

The area resident had listed their vehicle for sale and received several inquiries.

Some of those responding to the advertisement provided the seller with a link to a ‘vehicle audit report’ before the potential buyer would proceed further.

Police remind the public to be vigilant when following links that someone has sent to you, especially if asked to provide credit card numbers or other personal information.

Police offer the following tips:

To avoid scams of this nature, resist being pressured into acting immediately.

If an offer sounds too good to be true, that’s usually the case.

When buying or selling a vehicle or high-value items try to deal only with someone local.

Should a buyer request that you use a service you are unfamiliar with, look into its legitimacy by calling its customer service phone number and reading the privacy police and terms of service. Don’t use the service if you feel uncomfortable doing so.

Only sell property to someone who is willing to meet you in person, but try to have someone accompany you, or let others know where you plan to do the transaction.

Report incidents of fraud to local police, your bank or financial institution through which payment was made and use the “Report Ad” or “Report Abuse” link on the website where the item was listed for sale.
