Researcher: “If Hungary does not ratify Finland’s and Sweden’s NATO memberships, it will push NATO into crisis”

Researcher If Hungary does not ratify Finlands and Swedens NATO

Europe Minister Tytti Tuppurainen trusts that Hungary will keep its word and strengthen the membership of Finland and Sweden.

– If Hungary does not ratify the NATO memberships of Finland and Sweden, it will push NATO into crisis.

That’s what a researcher said in an interview with A-studio Katalin Miklóssy from the Aleksanteri Institute of the University of Helsinki on Tuesday.

However, Miklóssy does not believe that Hungary would not ratify.

– Hungary’s entire defense relies on NATO. So NATO has leverage in that.

Hungary is once again delaying the ratification of Finland’s and Sweden’s NATO membership applications. Initially, Hungary was expected to ratify the membership of Finland and Sweden already in the fall. There have been several delays.

Prime Minister of Hungary Viktor Orbán undersecretary Gergely Gulyás said on Saturday that the decision is moving to the end of March.

“Hungary pursued Russia’s interests”

In Miklóssy’s opinion, it is good to be worried about the warm relations between Russia and Hungary.

– Hungary has very consistently pursued Russia’s interests at least during the last 5-6 years. And not only within the European Union, but nowadays also in NATO.

European Minister Titti Tuppurainen (sd.) trusts that Hungarian Prime Minister Orbán will keep his word to Finland and Sweden.

– Viktor Orbán has said that he has nothing against the membership of Finland and Sweden. He has repeated several times that Hungary will ratify the membership of Finland and Sweden.

– However, it is about a NATO country and an EU member state. Yes, Hungary has fixed its basic solutions on these common structures. Ten [Venäjään kohdistunutta] the sanctions package has been unanimously agreed upon by Hungary along with others, Tuppurainen said.
