What is institutional racism?

The term is about racism that is embedded in institutions. In the report, KIS talks about institutional racism as: processes, policies and the (written and unwritten) rules of institutions that lead to inequality between people of different origins, skin color and/or religion. The resulting inequality is structural and collective: it is not about a few incidents or about one employee.

What that looks like in practice may differ. For example, the issue is that people with a migration background cannot progress as quickly or do not get a promotion opportunity. But it may also be that certain groups earn less money or are assessed differently. Finally, there may be racism in manners. Bad ‘jokes’ or compliments that are not actually compliments, such as: ‘You speak Dutch so well’.
