Deelen’s research is special: “It is the first time that the issue has been looked at in this way in the Netherlands.” She spoke to both veterinarians who treat companion animals and veterinarians who mainly work with animals from livestock farming. “The same types of considerations play a role there, where you see that the conditions in which we keep animals also play a role,” she explains. “Some veterinarians indicate that they mainly focus on the animal, while others also look at the function of an animal. Think of a pig at a petting zoo and a pig from livestock farming.”
