The impeachment process will investigate corruption allegations related to son Hunter Biden’s dealings in Ukraine and China while his father was vice president.
Republicans accuse Biden’s son of using his father’s position as vice president under Barack Obama to gain financial benefits and positions in Ukraine and China. However, no evidence for the allegations has yet been presented.
Baseless gimmick
Republicans expect the new investigation, which now has the formal backing of the Republican majority in the House of Representatives, will give them additional powers and more ammunition in the search for evidence.
President Joe Biden condemns the Republican party line, calling the move a baseless political stunt.
“Instead of doing their job on the urgent work that needs to be done, they are choosing to waste time on this baseless political stunt that even Republicans in Congress admit is not supported by the facts,” Biden said in a statement after the vote.
221 members of the Republican-controlled House of Representatives voted for an impeachment trial. 212 voted against.
