Sinn Fein has pledged to hold a referendum on the reunification of Ireland.
In Northern Ireland, the Republican-minded Sinn Fein party has taken a historic victory in the British local and regional elections. Sinn Fein rises to the position of the largest party and is Sky News (switch to another service) according to the first nationalist party to take power in the National Assembly of Northern Ireland during its 101-year history.
Sinn Fein has pledged to hold a referendum on the reunification of Ireland.
With its victory, the party can appoint its vice-chairman Michelle O’Neillin First Minister for Northern Ireland.
Earlier Saturday, O’Neill described the vote as a “crucial moment for change,” and he predicted a new era for Northern Ireland.
O’Neill promised to offer leadership that takes everything into account and celebrates diversity. He also promised to guarantee the rights and equality of all those who had previously been discriminated against and ignored.
By the time of the evening in Finland, 88 of the 90 places in Northern Ireland had survived.
In the top three, Sinn Fein was told to take 27 seats, the Union Party of Northern Ireland to the DUP 24 and the Alliance 17. BBC (switch to another service) according to the federal party had increased its seating position by nine compared to the previous election.
DUP demands changes to the post-Brexit trade agreement
Although Sinn Fein will be able to appoint the first minister in Northern Ireland, a government cannot be formed in the area if the DUP does not agree to take part.
Director of DUP Jeffrey Donaldson stressed to Sky News on Saturday that the DUP will not agree to join the new government unless the post – Brexit trade agreement between the EU and Britain is amended.
He urged the country’s Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, to honor his commitments and take the necessary steps with regard to the Northern Ireland Protocol. The protocol is intended to resolve the border issues between the EU and the breakaway Britain on the border between Northern Ireland and Ireland.
Donaldson insisted that the Northern Ireland Government be based on a solid foundation.
– And the long shadow of the Northern Ireland protocol is damaging our economy, it is damaging our political balance, he continued.
