Sergiy Stakhovsky, a former tennis player who is now fighting in the Ukraine to defend his country from the Russian invasion, criticized Tottenham manager, Antonio Conte, for his reflections on the punishments that UEFA and FIFA have imposed on Russian athletes. The Italian coach said that he did not understand that the sanctions also extended to sport.
“I’m not sure you understand the situation in Ukraine,” the Ukrainian wrote on social media. “Otherwise, I can’t imagine you making a comment where you are sad for Russian athletes and businessmen. Millions of Ukrainians had to flee their homes because of the Russian invasion. Millions have to go through hell in their own cities while Russian planes and artillery bombard them. Please wake up. The Russians will have to bear the collective blame for the destruction and murder they are committing in Ukraine.”
This confrontation comes as a result of Conte’s controversial statements during a press conference prior to a Tottenham match. “ANDIt is very sad that this serious situation, this war between Russia and Ukraine, is affecting football and sport.” Conte said. “I think it’s not fair. I know very well the work they do every day. They have to pay for this situation, I think it’s not right.” she stressed.
Stavhovsky retired tennis earlier this year and is now in Ukraine fighting to defend his country. She sent this message to Conte on Instagram and posted it for the whole world. He himself told a few days ago how he had to leave Hungary to go to his country to fight against the Russians as a result of the invasion.
