A new hospital is the victim of a cyberattack. This time it is the Rennes University Hospital. The alert began on Wednesday, at the end of the day, and a crisis unit was set up. The point of view of Gérald Kierzek, emergency doctor and medical director of Doctissimo.
This is not the first (and certainly not the last) CHU to be the victim of a cyberattack. After the establishments of Corbeil-Essones or Brest, it is the turn of the University Hospital of Rennes to be the victim of hackers, also called hackers of the Net.
An alert given Wednesday at the end of the afternoon
The attack began on Wednesday June 21 at the end of the afternoon, with the shutdown of the intranet, but also of the messaging services and the hospital center website. Despite the measures quickly taken, the hackers were able to collect a lot of data.
“As soon as this cyberattack was reported, the CHU implemented the necessary precautionary measures by isolating its information system from the Internet to limit the spread of the attack while ensuring the availability of medical applications internally. A crisis unit was immediately activated and a complaint was filed at the Rennes police station. indicates the CHU.
A data leak but no disruption in patient reception
If the hospital reacted quickly, it will therefore not have been enough to prevent the data leak. “Analyzes are in progress to qualify the quantity and type of data concerned“says the press release.
In addition, the hospital explains that it has made a declaration to the National Commission for Computing and Liberties (Cnil) and that it “will take the necessary measures to warn the persons concerned by this exfiltration of data“.
Despite this attack, the emergency reception and the SAMU-Centre 15 are operating normally, all medical activities and all physical appointments are maintained” added in its press release the establishment. Appointments can only be made by telephone until further notice.
Finally, the CHU also recommends that all its patients “Bring cash or check to pay for the treatments, payment by credit card is no longer possible” and to bring a paper version of his medical results, for appointments. This Friday, June 23, at the end of the morning, the establishment’s website was still not accessible.

“Overall, in France, hospital services have obsolete IT systems. Beyond this observation, it is important to make up for this delay, but without falling into total dependence on IT. Because until proven otherwise a cyberattack has never killed anyone! Hospitals must therefore better secure this sensitive data that is health data, ensure that it is stored in France, in particular. But also maintain the capacity to treat even in situations like this, what are cyberattacks“.
