[Mis à jour le 2 février 2023 à 20h05] Renée Zellwegger is today inseparable from her role as an awkward and unhappy thirty-something in “Le Journal de Bridget Jones”, broadcast on TF1 this Thursday, February 2, 2023. And yet, Bridget Jones could have had another face, since the American actress was absolutely not the production’s first choice for this role: the director of the feature film, Sharon Maguire, had Toni Colette in mind first in the role. However, she refuses the job.

The director of “Bridget Jones’s Diary” then considers Kate Winslet for the role, already a huge star since “Titanic”. However, the British actress is considered too young to play a thirty-year-old (she was indeed 26 years old). It is then Renée Zellwegger who is considered and who was able to demonstrate the extent of her ability to make people laugh and move in this role against Hugh Grant and Colin Firth. And fortunately, since Bridget Jones propelled the American actress to stardom.

Synopsis – Dive into the heart of the comic-sentimental adventures of a “single” thirty-year-old who feels bad about herself. Her name is Bridget Jones (Renee Zellweger). She is employed in a London advertising agency, “Pemberley Publishing”, and has four ambitions in life: to lose weight, to stop smoking, to stop drinking and, above all, to finally find true love. While her friends, Jude (Shirley Henderson), Shazza (Sally Phillips) and Tom (James Callis), keep giving her advice and advice as useless as they are desperate, Bridget hesitates between two suitors: her boss, the charming and sexy Daniel Cleaver (Hugh Grant) and Mark Darcy (Colin Firth), an old family friend who initially struck him as boring and distant. Clumsy, clumsy and full of humor, she recounts her setbacks, her sorrows and her joys in a diary, filled with her good resolutions.

“Bridget Jones’s Diary” is freely inspired by Helen Fielding’s eponymous novel, which is itself a modern adaptation of Jane Austen’s famous “Pride and Prejudice”. Given the considerable and international success of the film (with in particular more than 3.4 million admissions in France), a sequel was released in 2004, entitled “Bridget Jones: The Age of Reason”, just like the second part of the novel. We find the same actors, in the same roles. A third film, entitled “Bridget Jones’s Baby” should be released in the course of 2012 and will feature a Bridget in the middle of a midlife crisis and ready to do anything to have a child…
