“Removing things we like”

The school children in Trosa have had less meat for lunch. Instead, the menu consists of more vegetarian options and soups. In addition, several of the children’s favorites, such as tacos and hamburgers, are disappearing, reports P4 Sörmland. But the decision is not appreciated by the children.
– The food is not as good anymore, says a student the radio has spoken to.

School meals in Trosa municipality may this year cost roughly 800 million instead of just over 10 million, reports P4 Sörmland. And to meet the budget, the menu must be revised. Among other things, tacos will no longer be served as it is partly expensive and partly wasteful.

– There is often a lower food cost for the vegetarian on the menu. And the soup is also very budget-smart because there you can reuse a lot of leftovers and make soups out of it, says the municipality’s meal manager Jenny Sultan, to the radio.

The reason for the decision is that food prices have skyrocketed in the past year. In addition to reducing meat, butter has been replaced by plant-based alternatives.

– The prices of butter have increased the most. Last year it was over SEK 100 per kilo, explains Jenny Sultan.

“They take away things that we like”

But the decision is not appreciated by the students the radio spoke to. “The food is not as good as it has always been”. “They have had more soup. You get a little disappointed because you want the good food back again”. “They take away things that we like,” say three students from year 4 at Fornbyskolan in Vagnhärad.

The plant-based butter is not appreciated either.

– It tastes nothing, it’s not even salted. It feels like baking butter, says a student.
