Remembrance Day services to be held in Brantford, County of Brant

Remembrance Day services in Brantford and the County of Brant are planned for Nov. 11.

“The City of Brantford is proud to join fellow Canadians on Remembrance Day as we pay tribute to the courage and sacrifice of those who served and continue to serve our country during times of war, military conflict and peace,” said a news release issued by the city.

There will be an overnight light display at the Brant War Memorial at 6 Dalhousie St. starting Sunday, Nov. 10. A cadet vigil will be held on Nov. 10 from 6 pm to midnight and resume on Nov. 11 from 7 am to 10 :30 a.m.

The public is welcome to view the In Remembrance and Forget Me Not: Brantford’s Armenian History exhibits at the Brant Museum and Archives, 57 Charlotte St., on Nov. 11 from 1 pm to 5 pm Admission is by donation.

A Remembrance Day service will be held at the Brant War Memorial with front row seating only for veterans and their spouses or companions. Some bleacher seating will be available for the general public.

At 10:40 am a walking march leaves downtown Harmony Square en route to the Brant War Memorial.

The Civic Service of Remembrance starts at 10:50 am at the war memorial.

Weather permitting, a Lancaster and Mitchell B25 aircraft, provided by the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum, will do a fly-pass during the service.

Each year, the City of Brantford’s Remembrance Day organizing committee invites students from local schools to participate in a speech writing challenge. This year, students were asked to write a speech about honoring sacrifice and stories of service and courage.

Winning students from Braemar House School and the Brantford Haldimand Norfolk Catholic District School Board were selected to read their speeches during the ceremony.

Following the ceremony, attendees are invited to a free open house and a light luncheon at the Brantford Naval Veterans Association at 54 Wadsworth St. and at the Gunners Club at 115 Henry St.

Dalhousie Street between Market Street and Brant Avenue and Brant between Church and Colborne streets will be closed from 9:30 am to 11:45 am on Nov. 11.

Free parking will be available in downtown municipal parking lots from 10 am to 1 pm Veterans can park for free in the RBC lot. Parking time restrictions for on-street parking spaces downtown will be waived.

Brantford Transit and Brantford Lift will offer free rides from 9:30 am to 1:30 pm to and from the Brant War Memorial and Cenotaph for those attending the service.

The County of Brant is holding Remembrance Day services in Paris, Burford and St. George.

“It is a day to remember the brave individuals who fought for the freedoms we enjoy today and to pay tribute to the men and women who gave their lives in service,” said a post by the county. “As a community, we recognize the importance of preserving their legacy, ensuring that their stories are passed on to future generations.”
