In Italy, the far-right government, led by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, decided to criminalize unauthorized parties or meetings attended by more than 50 people, claiming that they would be “dangerous” for public order or security.
According to the news in the BBC, the move to criminalize the parties in question came after the Halloween party attended by more than 1000 people from Italy and abroad at a warehouse in the city of Modena at the weekend.
The party was banned amid complaints of noise and adversely affecting traffic in the area.
IMPRISONED FOR UP TO 6 YEARS
Under the law, organizers of unauthorized “dangerous parties” involving more than 50 people could be jailed for up to 6 years and their phones could be tapped.
Prime Minister Meloni argued that the law aims to prevent harm to people and that there are similar regulations elsewhere in Europe.
Meloni’s predecessor, the national unity government, started working to change the law after a major party killed 2 people in 2021.
But the far-right new government took tougher decisions, including large fines and confiscation of sound systems.
THE “FACIST MARCH” IN FAVOR OF MUSSOLINI Ignored
The government has been criticized for banning the party in Modena, while ignoring the “fascist march” organized by former dictator Benito Mussolini’s 2,000 supporters in Predappio over the weekend.
Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi argued that the march did not harm public order and has been going on for years, and that the two events were “completely different things”. (AA)
