The EU Commission announced that it has requested official information from Meta and Snapchat, the owners of Facebook, regarding the measures they have taken against people under the age of 18.

In the statement, it was reminded that within the scope of the new rules implemented within the scope of the EU Digital Services Law, companies must comply with additional obligations regarding the protection of children, and it was stated that the measures taken for the protection of minors and the risk assessments made in this field should be submitted to the Commission.

THEY MUST SUBMIT THE REQUESTED INFORMATION TO THE EU BY DECEMBER 1

In the statement, it was noted that Meta and Snapchat must submit the requested information to the EU by December 1, and that a fine may be imposed in case of an incorrect, incomplete or misleading response to the Commission’s information request, in accordance with the Union rules.

Recalling that Meta and Snapchat are classified as “Very Large Online Platforms” by the EU, it was stated in the statement that these platforms must comply with all the determined rules, including the assessment and reduction of risks related to the spread of illegal and harmful content, and the rights of children and the protection of minors.

The EU sent a similar request for information to YouTube and TikTok yesterday and asked about the measures they took in this field.

The law, which came into force in August, imposed strict rules on major digital platforms.

Fines of up to 6 percent of their global turnover can be imposed on digital platforms that violate the rules. In case of repeated violations, the activities of these platforms in the EU may be terminated. (AA)
