Finland, which increased its security measures after the outbreak of the Russia-Ukraine war, started the construction of the 200-kilometer fence planned to be built on the Russian border. In the statement made by the Finnish Border Guard, it was stated that the forest clearing works have started for the construction of a three-kilometer-long fence on both sides of the Imatra crossing point on the Russian border in the east of the country.
In the statement, it was stated that road construction and fence installation will start next month, and that the three-kilometer pilot project is expected to be completed by the end of June.
TO BE COMPLETED IN 2025
Aiming to complete the 70-kilometer fence, mostly in the southeast, by 2025, after the pilot implementation, Finland plans to fence 200 kilometers of its 1,300-kilometer border with Russia at a cost of approximately 380 million euros.
The fence, which will be equipped with night vision cameras, lights and speakers, is expected to be more than 3 meters high, especially in sensitive areas. Finland’s borders are currently surrounded by light wooden fences designed to prevent animals from crossing over to the wrong side.
After the mobilization order given in Russia, neighboring countries faced Russian influx. Estonia, Latvia, and Poland have also increased security at their borders with Russia. (UAV)
