ARK: Survival Ascended is scheduled to appear on Steam in October. But what kind of game is this anyway?

What is ARK: Survival Ascended anyway?

  • ARK: Survival Ascended (ASA) is an upcoming survival game from Studio Wildcard, the developers of the popular dinosaur adventure ARK: Survival Evolved (ASE).
  • ASA is not the successor to ARK: Survival Evolved that fans expected. This is called ARK 2 and is scheduled to appear at the end of 2024 after the sequel originally planned for 2022 was postponed again.
  • ARK: Survival Ascended is a revised version of the base game ARK: Survival Evolved, which will run on Unreal Engine 5 and with cleaned code. ASA is released for PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.

    • However, it is currently unclear whether it is a remaster or a remake. ASA’s first announcements mentioned a remaster (via survivetheark.com), but recently Wildcard dubbed the game a remake (via Steam). There are fundamental differences between a remake and a remaster.

    ARK: Survival Ascended – release, trailer and gameplay

    When is ARK: Survival Ascended released?? The release is planned for October 2023, but no further details are currently known – although the month is already coming to an end.

    Is there a trailer? Yes, the first trailer for ARK: Survival Ascended is scheduled to be released on an Xbox showcase today, October 25, 2023. The event starts at 7:00 p.m. and will be streamed live (via YouTube)

    The trailer from October 25th will show gameplay from ARK: Survival Evolved for the first time.

    Classic ARK experience instead of Souls-like adventure

    ARK: Survival Ascended is intended to take the gaming experience of the aging survival game to a modern level. In addition to the switch to Unreal Engine 5, ASA will receive cross-platform modding, improved graphics and performance.

    What does Wildcard do with ARK: Survival Ascended? In a blog post on September 30th, the developers of the dino adventure gave three reasons why they are developing ARK: Survival Ascended at all (via Steam).

  • The studio’s economic situation plays a role. According to the developers, it has proven “difficult” to ensure the “long-term survival of the studio” while developing ARK 2 without continuing to release paid expansions. The studio wants to continue generating income while the sequel is being developed.
  • In addition, the development team should improve their skills when working with Unreal Engine 5 while working on ARK: Survival Ascended.
  • With ARK: Survival Ascended, Wildcard also wants to offer a classic ARK experience on a cleaned code because ARK 2 is designed as a “Souls-like adventure” and therefore deviates from the original ARK game principle.

    • The ARK: Survival Ascended controversy

    When ARK: Survival Ascended was first announced on March 31, 2023, there was heavy criticism from fans on social media. This ultimately led to Wildcard changing the price and planned content for ASA.

    On top of that, the shutdown of the official servers of ARK: Survival Evolved was a particular thorn in the side of some players because they feared losing their game progress.

    However, on the day of the shutdown, a snapshot of the saves was saved and made available to players shortly afterwards so that they do not completely lose their progress and can continue playing on private servers or in solo lobbies.
