Along with characters like Michael Myers, Freddy Krueger and Jason Vorhees, the serial killer doll Chucky is one of the biggest horror film icons. After seven films, 2019’s Child’s Play is a welcome reinvention of the series. With the usual mix of nasty kills and black humor, Chucky gets a modern AI approach a suitable update. RTL II broadcasts the latest Child’s Play on Sunday evening at 10:15 p.m. as a German free TV premiere.

Horror remake Child’s Play delivers entertaining 90 minutes of great horror fun

The horror reboot revolves around young Andy (Gabriel Bateman), who receives the popular doll “Buddi” from his mother Karen (Aubrey Plaza) for his birthday. The new playmate is equipped with artificial intelligence and looks absolutely lifelike. When mysterious deaths suddenly begin to pile up around the doll (originally spoken by Luke Skywalker legend Mark Hamill), the bloody chaos can hardly be stopped.

Child’s Play is not a simple remake of the first part from 1988, but a smart twist on the myth surrounding the serial killer doll. The contemporary AI aspect and likeable characters (Aubrey Plaza is always an asset) round off the horror fun.

The murder sequences, the most important aspect for many genre fans, are sparse, but worth it quite bloody and connected with creative gags therefore. A severed head sometimes ends up as an involuntarily wrapped gift for the neighbor or a self-driving car becomes a nasty deathtrap.
