Reintroduction program for 2000 white rhinos begins in South Africa

Forty specimens were released into private reserves in the province of KwaZulu-Natal. These animals belonged to the mega rhino farm which was privately owned and which was sold to the NGO African Parks in September 2023. The objective of this organization is to reintroduce all rhinos within 10 years.

We now know what the future of the 2,000 rhinos will be formerly held by John Hume. This South African ruined himself by breeding the equivalent of 15% of the world’s population of white rhinos, without being able to sell their horns. His model, officially intended to preserve the species, was not profitable.

Rhinos will therefore be reintroduced at a rate of 300 per year. They will be dispersed to encourage genetic mixing and they will also be dehorned to avoid tempting poachers. Attacks on rhinos have caused the global population to drop from 20,000 in 2012 to 16,000 today.

LONG African Parks, present in 12 countries, is giving itself ten years to complete its mission of rewilding rhinos. In June 2023, it began the reintroduction of 16 white rhinos in Garamba Park in the north of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Her goal is to reintroduce 76 within three years, and now she knows where to find them.
