Reinforced controls against racial accidents are being investigated

The government is appointing an inquiry to prevent deficiencies in buildings that could lead to serious accidents.

“With this decision, the government wants to investigate how it is possible to prevent safety deficiencies in the construction process and in existing buildings and in this way especially prevent serious personal injuries as a result of these,” says Minister of Housing Johan Danielsson in a press release.

In March 2020, the roof of Tarfalahallen in Kiruna collapsed. The roof construction was unstable and there were deficiencies in the installation, the Swedish Accident Investigation Board stated. The authority found buildings with similar roofs in 51 municipalities, and has subsequently recommended that requirements be introduced for dimensioning control by an independent actor.

The National Board of Housing, Building and Planning also believes that such measures would lead to a sharp reduction in racial accidents. These are checks on load-bearing capacity in both construction projects and existing buildings.

The investigation must be reported no later than 29 September 2023.

The landslide at Tarfalahallen did not cause any injuries. Two people who were in the building survived unharmed.
