Jannik Sinner advanced to the quarterfinals at the Australian Open. Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina defeated Russia’s Veronika Kudermetova, the handshake was missed.
The world number one in men’s singles tennis and the reigning champion of the Australian Open, a grand slam tournament Jannik Sinner advanced to the quarterfinals at the Australian Open when he knocked off the Dane Holger Runen 6–3, 3–6, 6–3, 6–2.
It was not easy for the champion, as he needed medical help in the heat of Melbourne.
Sinner asked for a medical timeout in the third period of the match when his hands were shaking in the 30 degree heat. The doctor measured the Italian star’s pulse, and the match was allowed to continue.
– It was tough. The morning was strange because I didn’t warm up at all. I knew it would be difficult. But I played really well, the serve worked very well. I just tried to stay mentally sharp, Sinner talked after a hard fight.
In the quarter-finals, Sinner will face either the hope of the host country, ranked eighth by Alex de Minaur or of young American promise by Alex Michelsen.
A 19-year-old fell from the rising stars of the United States Learner Roadfor whom an Italian ten years older than him Lorenzo Sonego was too much. In the second round Daniil Medvedev surprising Tien succumbed to a 3–6, 2–6, 6–3, 2–6 defeat.

Women’s singles of Ukraine Elina Svitolina advanced to the quarterfinals. Svitolina defeated the Russian Veronika Kudermetova 6–4, 6–1. As has become customary after the start of the war between the two countries, the traditional handshake between the Ukrainian and Russian players after the match was not done.
– I try to show the same will to win as Ukraine did in the war. It’s really difficult for Ukraine, the war has been going on for almost three years. Every day we all have a very heavy backpack on our backs, and I strive to find ways to bring a little light to Ukrainians. Fighting is the least I can do, Svitolina stated.
Svitolina will face the United States in the quarterfinals by Madison Keyswho defeated the sixth-ranked Kazakh Elena Rybakina 6–3, 1–6, 6–3.
